The Last Breath

It is quiet here.

An eclipse.

The shadow is swallowing the moon.

Dark streets.

She stares at the moon,
listening to his heavy breaths.

She knows
these will be his last.

She leans over,
holds his skinny hands gently.

She listens.

Every breath tightens her heart.

She knows she is looking at the end.

She dares to feel it all.

Even this.

The sound of his last breath.

A long journey.

A painful journey.

A tear traces the face.

The moon is disappearing.

A Goodbye

Don’t look back.

Don’t talk.

Don’t hug.

Don’t look into the eyes.

Walk forward.

With shrunken shoulders.

A heavy heart.

A knot in the throat.

Don’t look back.

Not now.

This is a forever goodbye.

Do they dare?

Sitting behind the window.

She is watching.

Rain falls.

People pass.

Heads are down.

Long coats, dark umbrellas, fast steps.

No one sees her.

If they looked carefully, they would find themselves
somewhere in her eyes.

Do they dare?

They are rushing.

Some into the unknown.

Some to a lover.

Some away from life.

Some simply keep pace with the rest.

Thirst to reach.

Thirst to possess.

Thirst to keep.

The girl behind the window knows.

The game looks serious.

That is the illusion.

Nothing lasts.

Not the rain.

Not the people.

Not the towers.

Not the lovers.

Not the touches.

Not the bonds.

Not the lives.

She sits behind the window, watching them rush.

It is still raining.
